Mission and Service

At First UMC, we believe that every person possesses unique gifts and passions to be used to serve God, the Church, and the world. All people are encouraged to engage in active service, putting hands and feet to our vision to love God and bless others.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

First Feeding Neighbors

First Feeding Neighbors is a ministry of First UMC that provides meals for our neighbors at those times when the need is the greatest.  First Feeding Neighbors provides nutritious sack lunches to families when students are on school breaks (Christmas, spring, and summer vacations). Volunteers are needed for all phases of the work, including shopping, lunch assembly, and lunch delivery. Check the church calendar for upcoming events, or contact the Church Office for more information. (517) 321-5187.

First Sharing Books

First Sharing Books is a ministry of First UMC that provides books for children of all ages. Organized by our Library Team and held on the third Monday of each month at 3:00 p.m., First Sharing Books offers free books to families in our community. Volunteers are needed for all phases of this work, including circulating invitations, set up/tear down, and handing out the books. Check the church calendar for upcoming events, or contact the Church Office for more information. (517)321-5187.

Cumberland Clothes Closet

The Cumberland Clothes Closet assists classroom teachers by providing clothing for the children of Cumberland Elementary School. Donations of new and gently used clothing in children's sizes 4 thorugh 12 are gratefully accepted. We are now collecting coats, hats, and mittens for winter!

Christian Services Network

First UMC participates with the Christian Services Network (CSN) of the Greater Lansing Area. The CSN serves as a clearinghouse providing compassion and resources for those in need of assistance. Networked together with churches all over the Lansing area, First UMC seeks to bring the transforming love of Jesus to families in crisis, persons transitioning from welfare to work, and anyone who finds themselves in need. Want to know how you can help? Contact the Church Office for current projects and service opportunities.

Meals on Wheels

First UMC serves as a delivery drop-site for the Lansing area Meals on Wheels Program, a service of the Tri-County Office on Aging. Meals on Wheels provides hot, balanced meals to homebound senior citizens who can't prepare their own food.

Meals on Wheels relies on a volunteer delivery team to make its program work, and they are always looking for new volunteers. Several First UMC members serve as volunteer drivers, offering an hour or so each week to deliver meals. If you’d like to find out more about volunteering for Meals on Wheels, contact the Church Office for more information.
