United Methodists Are the Second Largest
Protestant Denomination In America

United Methodists hold to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith, including:
God in three persons:

  • God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit;
  • Salvation offered to all persons through the saving grace of Jesus Christ;
  • The authority of Scripture in matters of faith and practice.

United Methodists value worship that is passionate and small groups where people can grow in faith. John Wesley, one of the founders of our movement, said that, “There is no holiness, but social holiness.” What he meant was that whether in worship, prayer, reading the bible, or any other part of our faith we are enriched by the presence of a community. Our faith is strengthened by the love we have for one another as we grow deeper in love with God.

United Methodists are also known for uniting their personal faith journeys with hands-on outreach to the world. At Lansing First, we believe that holiness happens at the intersection of love and justice. All persons are encouraged to grow in knowledge and love of God through worship and study, and you’ll also find plenty of opportunities to get involved in sharing the hope and healing of Christ within our local and global communities.

United Methodists are evangelical, meaning we are committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Our understanding of scripture is not fundamentalist or overly literal. We value the authority of scripture as God’s self-revelation, but also know that our encounter with God is shaped by our own experiences, the wisdom of tradition, and the illuminating light of reason. United Methodists possess a vital faith with strong convictions, while recognizing that the world is not always black and white. We are willing to ask questions, to wrestle with difficult issues, and to do so with grace and compassion. At Lansing First, we welcome all who seek to faithfully walk with God in the context of our contemporary world.
